A ceremony was held in Oslo to award this year's Nobel Peace Prize to the jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo. The Chairman of the Nobel Committee Thorbjorn Jagland said, the connection between peace and human right was undisputed. To a sanding ovation he said Mr. Liu had simply exercised his civil rights and calling for democracy in China and must be released. Mr. Liu's chair was left empty at the ceremony. Mr. Liu's wife and other relatives were prevented from leaving China to collect the award. Meanwhile, China has blacked out international channels that carried live transmissions of the Nobel Prize ceremony including BBC World News and CNN. Chinese stations did not broadcast the event. Many news websites have also been blocked. The Chinese characters for Oslo and those for empty chair are being censored on Remren, China's main social network.
