LIC becomes first institution to partner UID

State-run Life Insurance Corporation – LIC today become the first institution from the financial sector to partner the Unique Identification Programme. The LIC today signed a MoU with UIDAI at a function in Mumbai in the presence of Mr. Nandan Nilekani, Chairman, UIDAI and Mr. T S Vijayan, Chairman, LIC. Under this initiative, LIC will share information like name, address, date of birth, sex and biometrics of its 21-crore policy-holders. Speaking on the occasion, Chairman of UIDAI, Mr. Nandan Nilekani termed this partnership as a significant milestone in its mission of providing a unique 12- digit ID number to every resident in India. He added that the data that will be collected from LIC will only be used for authentication and will not be shared with any other agency. Mr. Nilekani also sounded confident that the first unique identification numbers will be rolled numbers between August 2010 and February 2011, as promised in this year's Budget. Meanwhile, Mr. Vijayan has said that this initiative will help LIC in catering to customers with multiple policies, while also giving a fillip to its social schemes like micro-insurance. He said that LIC has entered into this partnership with the aim of providing best-in-class services to its customers and also to fulfill its commitment of extending insurance coverage to each and every Indian.
