Libyan PM kidnapped by militants from Tripoli hotel

The Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan has been kidnapped by unidentified militants and taken to undisclosed location. The incident took place early hours this morning when around 100-150 unidentified militia stormed the hotel Corinthia where the Prime Minister Zeidan was and took him away in a convoy of cars to an undisclosed location. Most of the top leaders and senior Government officials live in and around the Corinthia hotel in the capital Tripoli. The Libyan Government spokesperson confirmed the reports of kidnapping of the Prime Minister Ali Zeidan and said he has been taken to an unknown location for unknown reasons by a group of men. Earlier reports quoting security guards at the hotel said he had been detained.

No group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of the Libyan Prime Minister. But reports suggest that the rebel Islamist Revolutionary militia may be behind the move. Only on Tuesday, Mr. Zeidan had urged the West to help curb militancy in Libya on Tuesday saying the country was being used as a base for export of weapons through the region. Analysts say that the recent arrest of Al Qaeda terrorist Abu Anas Al Libi by the US may also have triggered the move by the rebel Islamists. The militant, suspected to be the man behind the attacks on US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania 15 years ago was captured by US Special forces on Saturday from inside Libya. Some of the Islamist militia groups had expressed resentment over his arrest. Libya has been witness to intense rivalry between several groups of tribal militias and Islamist militants for a say in power and the Government has been finding it difficult to rein them in even after two years of the toppling of the Gaddafi regime from the country.
