Libyan opposition forces close to Tripoli, Gaddafi unleashes air attacks

As opposition forces stormed close to Libyan capital Tripoli, embattled leader Muammar Gaddafi unleashed air attacks. Libyan air force planes reportedly attacked ammunition depots in two separate locations south of opposition-held second city Benghazi. Unrest continued in and around the capital, with three key areas close to the east of Tripoli falling to opposition forces advancing from Az-Zawiyah, just 50 kms west of the capital. Rebels fought government forces trying to take back strategic coastal cities on either side of the capital Tripoli. At least 1,000 lives have been lost in the fighting so far. The European Union has approved a package of sanctions against Gaddafi, including immediate freezing of all assets of the Libyan dictator, his family and close associates. US Ambassador to the UN says Washington is in talks with its NATO partners and other allies about military options for dealing with Libya. Susan Rice said yesterday the United Nations is looking at all options including the imposition of a no-fly zone, to force Gadhafi's government to stop killing its own people.
