Libyan-chartered ship carrying aid heads towards Egypt

Israeli Army Radio has reported that Libyan-chartered ship carrying aid for Palestinians in Gaza is heading towards Egypt's port of El Arish.<br/><br/>Israeli officials have said that cargo of the Libyan aid ship will not be allowed to reach Gaza port. The ship – named the "Amalthia" with 12 crew and 15 activists and supporters on board as carrying about 2,000 tons of humanitarian aid supplied by the Gadhafi International Charity and Development Association. The charity is headed by the son of the Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi, Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi.<br/><br/>A similar effort of a flotilla on 31st May this year resulted Israeli navy raid in which 9 Turkish activists were killed. Following international pressure after the incident, Israel eased the terms of the land blockade on the territory, but the naval blockade has so far remained in place.<br/><br/>Israel imposed the blockade on Gaza citing security reasons, following the Hamas takeover of the Gaza Strip in 2007.
