Libya: Political unrest continues; Indians asked not to travel

India today advised its nationals not to travel to Libya in view of the prevailing situation in that country. In a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, it said that New Delhi is watching the situation as 18,000 thousand Indian's are living there. The embassy at Tripoli has set up a round the clock control room which can be contacted for further assistance. Earlier, the foreign secretary Nirupama Rao said that all nationals and Indian companies in Libya are safe. Libya has been rocked by unprecedented protests against the Gadhafi regime. It is reported around 100 people have died in the protests.Libyan security forces opened fired on mourners at a funeral for anti-government protesters in the eastern city of Benghazi today. The action comes a day after commandos and foreign mercenaries loyal to longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi pummeled demonstrators with assault rifles and other heavy weaponry as well as knives.Libyan protesters defied a fierce crackdown by Gadhafi's regime, returning today to a square outside a court building in the flashpoint city of Benghazi to demand the overthrow of the ruler. Witnesses told The Associated Press hundreds of demonstrators gathered early morning at the court building after a day of bloodshed, during which Libyan forces opened fire on mourners leaving a funeral for protesters. In the hours after that attack, a medical official said at least 15 people were killed.
