There are conflicting reports from different parts of Libya as to who is gaining the upper hand in the confrontation between rebels and forces loyal to Col. Gaddafi. Fresh clashes are reported in Bin Jawad, a town between the opposition held oil port of Ras Lanuf and the city of Sirte, controlled by the government. Claims by Col. Gaddafi's forces that they have taken control of Ras Lanuf and Misrata are contradicted by reports on the ground. According to reports there are still hundreds of pro-Gaddafi supporters out on the streets of the capital. Many are firing guns in the air and celebrating what the Government has told them of significant military victories over rebels in the east of the country. But there are also credible reports from there. A town like Misrata and Ras Lanuf are still being held by anti Gaddafi forces, contradicting the government line. And it is still impossible to say what the nature of the very heavy gun fire was than rang out across Tripoli this morning. The Gaddafi Government insisted it was all celebratory fire and not as many first thought clashes between pro and anti government forces.Witnesses in Libya have given details of British military operation near Benghazi which ended with eight people including six suspected members of British Special Forces being detained by Libyan rebel guards. A report from Benghazi says according to eye witnesses, a helicopter landed a short distance outside Benghazi in the early hours of yesterday morning. Six men presumed to be British Special Forces were met by two men on the ground, one of whom is a British man who runs a farm on the outskirts of the city. They went to the compound of an agricultural company where they were challenged by Libyan guards and asked if they had weapons. Witnesses said when the men's bags were checked, they were found to contain arms, ammunition, explosives, maps and passports from at least four different nationalities. At that point, all eight men were arrested and taken to an army base in Benghazi.
