Less participation of women in MNREGA a concern: Sonia

Congress President Sonia Gandhi today expressed anxiety over lesser participation of women in MNREGA in her Lok Sabha constituency Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh. Wrapping up her two-day visit to Rae Bareli, Gandhi asked her representatives to take note of the issues raised during her meetings with the locals.

In the meetings, people's representatives highlighted various problems of the area and sought her help in resolving them. She was also told that 100 days' job under the MGNREGA, was not enough.

On the power problem, the Congress chief asked the MLAs to do whatever was required from their side while saying that she would also make efforts in this regard.

This was Gandhi's first visit to her Lok Sabha constituency after the Congress party's debacle in Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections earlier this year. Congress President came to Rae Bareli on Thursday and announced national highway projects worth Rs 1,800 crore besides some other projects for the state. The Lucknow-Rae Bareli road is to be converted into four lanes at a cost of Rs 600 crore.

Gandhi also met delegations from ITI, NTPC, UP State spinning mills and Nandganj Sehori Sugar Mill and representatives of primary teachers' association besides a number of local residents who submitted memorandums regarding their problems.
