Over one hundred people were killed when flash flood triggered by torrential rain struck Leh town in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. Leh Administration has set up a 24 hour helpline to provide any information about the incident. The telephone numbers are 09906990787 and 09906990835.State Police Chief Kuldeep Khoda said that 112 bodies had been recovered so far and the toll may go up. He said at least 370 people had been injured in the natural calamity that struck the region on Thursday night. He said several far-flung villages are yet to be accessed by rescue teams in this high-altitude terrain. Over 200 people are still reported to be missing from the worst-hit village Chougham Sar, 13 kilometres from Leh. The State Police has set up two camps to provide food and shelter to nearly 2,000 people. Police Chief said, the camps will remain operational till alternate arrangements are made. Massive rescue operations are underway involving the State Police, paramilitary forces and the Army in Leh town. Thirty three columns of Army personnel have been deployed for the rescue operations. Leh airport, which was also hit by the inclement weather, has been made operational to facilitate landing of aircraft carrying relief material and rescue teams.Chief Minister Omar Abdullah flew to Leh to make an on-the-spot assessment of the situation. He visited the areas and spoke to the affected families. A three-member Central team comprising Farooq Abdullah, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Prithviraj Chavan will be visiting the area today. A team of 140 personnel of the National Disaster Relief Force alongwith with doctors and paramedical staff will accompany them. The nation, led by President Pratibha Patil expressed grief over the tragedy. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh too expressed sorrow over the loss of life and property in the flash floods and announced ex gratia relief of Rs 1 lakh each to next of kin of each of the deceased. The State Government has also announced Rs 2-lakh relief for the families of each of those killed in the natural disaster.
