Leh death toll rises to 170

In Jammu and Kashmir, the death toll in the Leh tragedy has risen to 170, about 400 people are still missing after the region was hit by flash floods triggered by a cloud burst on Friday. Three French nationals, an Italian and a Spaniard were among 23 foreigners killed in the cloudburst and flash floods. French authorities have launched a search along with the Indian Army for three missing French tourists. The French trekkers have been missing since Thursday evening near the village of Sumda Chenmo in the mountainous region after being cut off by a flooded river. 73 injured people, including security personnel, were flown from Leh to Udhampur yesterday by the Indian Air Force for medical help. The US State Department spokesman P J Crowley said in Washington that the US Embassy in New Delhi has dispatched a team to Leh to provide necessary assistance to around 100 flood affected Americans. Life is slowly returning to normalcy in Leh with the affected people beginning to return to their homes to clear the debris. AIR correspondent Yangchan Dolma reports, the Leh market is lively with the reopening of shops for business. The District Administration officials, the Army, ITBP and CRPF are engaged in assisting the flood affected people. BSNL has restored mobile phone services in the region. Efforts are also on for the early restoration of traffic along the Leh-Srinagar National Highway and Leh-Manali Highway. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has extended all help to the State for the rehabilitation of the victims of flash floods in the Leh region.
