Legendary painter M F Hussain Passes Away in London

Celebrated Indian artist M F Husain, who earned both fame and wrath for his paintings, died in London today. He was 95.Popularly known as MF and regarded as “Picasso of India”, the artist breathed his last at the Royal Brompton Hospital at 2.30 am local time. Family sources said, Husain had been keeping “indifferent health” for the last one-and-a-half month.Born on September 17, 1915 in Pandharpur, MF Hussain did his schooling from Indore. In 1935, he moved to Bombay and joined Sir J. J. School of Art. He started off by painting cinema hoardings and came into limelight as painter in the late 1940s. In 1952, MF Hussain's first solo exhibition was held at Zurich and soon he became popular in Europe and USA. Hussain went on to become one of the highest paid painters in India. His paintings have fetched millions of dollars at the auction. In 1966, MF Hussain was honored with Padma Shree by the Government of India. In 1967, MF Hussain made his first film “Through the Eyes of a Painter”. The film was shown at the Berlin Film Festival and won a Golden Bear. He has also made two Hindi movies, “Gaja Gamini” and “Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities.”Information and broadcasting minister Ms Ambika Soni said Mr Hussain's love for India has never died down even after he opted for Qatar citizenship. The President and the Prime Minister have condoled the death of M F Hussain. In a message, the President Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil said, his death would create a void in the world of art and creativity. The Prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh in his message described Hussain’s death as a national loss.
