Left Wing Extremism poses major threat to country: Chidambaram

Home Minister P. Chidambaram today said that Left-wing extremism poses a major threat to the country. Inaugurating a national workshop on development strategies for implementation of rural development schemes in 60 Naxal-affected districts under the Integrated Action Plan, Mr Chidambaram said, the greatest challenge is to establish governance in areas affected by Left-wing extremism. He asserted that the primary responsibility of maintaining law and order and managing the development works in these regions lies with the State Governments. The Home Minister emphasized that the Centre can only assist by providing funds, security forces, technological assistance and other guidance to tackle the Left-wing extremism.Mr. Chidambaram, however, said that the most effective way of dealing with the problem of Naxalism is to win the hearts and minds of villagers. He said that the battle against Naxalism can not be won without the support of local people. Mr. Chidambaram urged the state governments to play an important role in winning the trust of the villagers in the Naxal-hit districts. In his address, Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh underlined the need to develop strategies which can deliver the desired outcome. The workshop is being attended by District Collectors from 60 Left-wing extremism affected areas along with the representatives from the Centre and the affected States to ensure effective implementation of the development programmes in these areas.
