Left Parties urge MPs to oppose Civil Nuclear Liability Bill

The left parties have urged Member of Parliament from all parties to oppose the Civil Nuclear Liability bill. They alleged that the whole attempt by the government is to exempt US reactor suppliers from any burden in case of accidents while Indian taxpayers will have to pay for it.

The CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said this at a joint press conference in New Delhi today. He alleged that UPA government is willing to sacrifice the interests of the Indian people to promote US supplies.

The Congress has strongly refuted the charge that Civil Liability For Nuclear Damage Bill, was harmful to Indian interests and said that the Left parties along with the BJP were trying to "settle scores" as they had earlier failed to stop the Indo-US nuclear deal despite their stiff opposition.

Rebutting the allegations that the government is trying to pass the Bill under US pressure, the Congress spokesman, Manish Tiwari said the Left parties should understand that a country having a growth rate of 9 percent and an independent foreign policy need not take any decision under other's pressure.
