Left Front gets absolute majority in Tripura, NPF leads in Nagaland & Congress in Meghalaya

The Left Front gets an absolute majority in Tripura winning 46 seats of the 53 results declared in the 60 member assembly so far. Seven seats have gone in favour of the Congress. In the outgoing House, the Left parties had 49 members while the Congress was represented by 10 members.

In Nagaland, of the 40 results declared so far, 26 have gone in favour of the ruling Naga Peoples Front while the Congress and the NCP four each. BJP secured one seat. Four constituencies went to other parties while one Independent candidate has been elected.

In Meghalaya, the Congress has won 19 seats and is leading in 10 others. The United Democratic Party which had an alliance with the Congress in the outgoing assembly has won six seats. One NCP candidate has also won the election.

In Tripura, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has registered convincing victory from Dhanpur constituency by a margin of over six thousand votes. State Assembly Speaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath defeated his nearest Congress rival by over 2 thousand 800 votes at Yuvrajnagar constituency.

Senior Left front leaders and sitting ministers including Anil Sarkar, Badal Choudhury, Manindra Reyang, Aghore Deb Barman have also been re-elected from their constituencies.

But Science and Technology minister and RSP candidate Jay Govinda Deb Ray lost in Radha Kishorpur constituency to Congress candidate Pranjit Singha Ray. Three Congress sitting MLA and Indigenous National Party of Twipra, INPT President Vijay Kumar Ranghkal, which is an ally of Congress failed to get re-elected. Five women candidates of CPI-M have won the election.

In Meghalaya, prominent winners include Cabinet Ministers H.D.R. Lyngdoh and Prestone Tynsong. Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, his wife D.D. Shira and his brother Zenith Sangman are poised for a big win.

In Nagaland, former State Chief Minister K.L. Chishi of Congress has been defeated in the Dimapur-I constituency by NPF candidate Tovihoto Ayemi by a margin of 1800 votes.

In Northern Angami-II State Chief Minister and NPF leader Mr. Neiphiu Rio has been elected defeating his nearest Congress rival Kevise Sogotsu by a margin of over twelve thousand votes.

In the byelections to assembly constituencies in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress, Congress and Forward Bloc have won one seat each in the byelection in three constituencies in the state.

In Engligh Bazar seat the Trinamool Congress nominee and State Tourism Minister Krishnendu Narayan Choudhary, in Reginagar Congress nominee Rabiul Alam choudhary and in Nalhati Forward Bloc candidate Deepak Chatterjee have been declared elected.

Our Kolkata correspondent reports that the Trinamool Congress and Forward Bloc have snatched one seat each from the Congress in the by-election.

In the byelection to Chalfilh assembly constituency in Mizoram, Congress candidate Ngurdingliana has defeated his nearest Mizo Natinal Front rival Lalvenhima Hmar by a margin of over 2800 votes.
