Lebanon's top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, died today after a long illness. According to Lebanon’s official news agency, Prime Minister Saad Hariri has mourned the death of Ayatollah Fadlallah. In a statement he said, Lebanon lost a great national and spiritual authority. Fadlallah, who was 75, was known for his staunch anti-American stance, had a strong following among Shiite communities both in Lebanon and his native Iraq. Fadlallah was in hospital for the past two weeks but his condition deteriorated on Friday when complications from a liver problem led to an internal hemorrhage.
