Leather industry to aim at net-zero carbon footprint to meet environmental norms: Dr Jitendra Singh

<span style="color: #222222;">Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh today said, the leather industry in India will aim at net-zero carbon footprint to meet the environmental norms. <br />''<br />''He was speaking at the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of the Central Leather Research Institute, a research centre under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in Chennai. He said, the new vision for the leather sector for the next twenty-five years would be on sustainability, total recyclability, income parity for workers and brand building.<br />''<br />''Dr Jitendra Singh said, attractive financial support is available from the Department of Science and Technology to Start-ups, if they come up with innovative leather products. He said, efforts are on to prepare customized footwear for the people by using 3D technology which envisages scanning the feet of the person to prepare their footwear. He said, seventy-three districts in the country are included to implement the project in the first phase.<br />''<br />''Dr Jitendra Singh said, there are as many as half a million cells in the palm of feet that enable the sweating process and leather enjoys an unmatched potential for transpiration. He said, the Indian leather sector supports the livelihood of more than 45 lakh people in the country. He also expressed satisfaction that in 2021, leather goods valued at 40,000 crore rupees have been exported.</span><br />
