Leather Exports set to increase

Exports of leather and leather products are set to increase with the implementation of measures recommended by the Task Force on Transaction Costs in Exports constituted by the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The Council for Leather Exports has stated in a press release that the implementation of measures such as dispensing with several documents for issue of import and export licenses and abolishing of application fee for export promotion schemes will benefit exporters. The Task force has also recommended that Kanpur and Jalandhar be included in the locations for the direct import of raw hides and has proposed that animal quarantine facilities be set up in these centres. The release also said that the exports of leather and leather products touched 3.40 million US dollars in 2009-10 recording a Compound Annual Growth Rate of about 5.43 per cent.
