Central and state government leaders today paid their last respects to the 76 CRPF personnel killed in the deadliest Naxal attack in jungles of Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh. Home Minister P Chidambaram, visited Jagdalpur, 350 kilometers from Raipur and placed a wreath in front of the bodies of the slain jawans, 75 of whom belonged to the CRPF. One head constable of the state police deputed with the paramilitary unit was also killed in the attack yesterday.

Mr. Chidambaram also met some of the family members of the dead jawans. State Governor Shekhar Dutta, Chief Minister Raman Singh and senior state police and paramilitary officers also paid their homage to the personnel. The Home Minister is expected to review the Maoist menace at a high-level meeting with the state authorities. The attack shook the Centre and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh held a meeting with Chidambaram and assessed the situation. Both of them expressed shock over the attack and grief over the loss of lives. The bodies of the deceased jawans have been kept in the police line at Jagdalpur after postmortem. The bodies will be dispatched to their respective home states today. The deceased CRPF jawans belonged to states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, and Rajasthan.

Meanwhile, a massive search operation has been launched to nab the maoists and all the inter-state borders of Chhattisgarh have been sealed. Police stations across the Naxal affected districts of the state have been put on high alert. In a related development, all police stations and camps in West Bengal, especially in three Maoist-affected districts, were today put on high alert after the Naxal attack on security personnel in Chhattisgarh. The three Maoist-affected districts are West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia.

In Andhra Pradesh, a red alert has been sounded across the state and security stepped up for Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, Ministers, MPs, and other VIPs in the wake of the Maoists ambush in Chhattisgarh yesterday. As part of the beefed up security, special attention has been given to those known to have been on the hit list of the extremists. The check-posts and vulnerable points on the borders with other States, particularly Chhattisgarh, have been strengthened with deployment of Greyhounds, the anti-naxalite elite force, to prevent infiltration of Maoists. Police deployment has also been enhanced at the state Secretariat in Hyderabad and around important Government offices in districts, especially those bordering Orissa such as Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam. In Jharkhand, Political parties across the spectrum have urged the Shibu Soren government to take the Naxal attack in neighbouring Chhattisgarh seriously and step up anti-Maoist operations in the state. JMM spokesman Simond Marandi wondered why only 120 security personnel were sent to a Maoist stronghold like Dantewada.
