Former Union Minister and six-time Lok Sabha member and once Rajya Sabha member from Assam, Bijoy Krishna Handique died today at a hospital in Jorhat, Assam . 81 year old Handique,who started his political carrier early in the 70's together with present CM of Assam Tarun Gogoi was in the Central Government for two terms under Dr.Manmohan Singh. He held Defence (state..2004 to 2006) ,Chemicals (2006-2009),Mines and Develepment of North Eastern Region Ministries in 2009 to 2011.He represented Rajya Sabha from Assam since 1980 to 1985 and was a Member of legislative assembly of Assam in 1971 to 1975.<br/><br/>Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi , Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress parties and many others and organisations condoled the demise of the former leader.<br/>Ms Gandhi said that Handique's journey in public life, both in his home state of Assam as well as at the Centre, was remarkable. She said he was a valued member of the previous UPA governments and the void created by his death will be hard to fill.
