Law Minister Moily proposes to bring legislation for making lawyers accountable

The Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily proposed to bring legislation for making lawyers accountable. Mr. Moily said in New Delhi that the proposal envisages a three pronged mechanism. This includes setting up of a Legal Services Board, Consumer Penal and Ombudsman to check malpractice by the advocates. He said, the proposed legislation makes it clear that the Board, Panel and the Ombudsman will have distinct mandate from the Bar Council of India and State Bar Councils. The Law Minister said, if government is bringing strict norms for judges, similar norms for lawyers is a must to maintain a balance.
