Law and order in UP not satisfactory: Chidambaram

Union Home Minister P Chidambarm has said the law and order in Uttar Pradesh is not satisfactory. He was responding to queries from the media persons on the situation in the wake of land acquisition agitation in a number villages in Greater Noida. He described the situation as distressing as farmers are protesting on the acquisition of land and compensation . Some lives have been lost in the protests. He criticised the way Chief Minister Mayawati is handling the protests and expressed hope that the Uttar Pradesh government will take appropriate measures to address their demands. Mr. Chidambaram also disapproved of the police lathicharge on Congress activists in Lucknow.In a reply to a question Mr. Salman Khurshid said as a Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi has every right to express his concern for farmers in Bhatta Parsoal villages and his arrest was not justified.He said there is no need to interfere with it and now it is more than evident that the people of Uttar Pradesh are extremely unhappy over the manner in which the matter is being dealt with. Mr. Khurshid said UP Chief Minister Mayawati is jittery and losing sleep over the tremendous support and respect Rahul Gandhi got both in and outside party. In a related development, the UP Police arrested senior BJP leaders Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi in Ghaziabad on Thursday. Several Congress leaders including UPCC chief Dr. Rita Bahuguna Joshi were also arrested across the state during the protests in Lucknow. The Congress had called for UP bandh today. The Congress and BJP have demanded judicial inquiry into the incident of police atrocities in Bhatta Parsaul on Saturday last. Bhartiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait along with 100 workers was arrested near Ganga Nagar barrier while he was on his way to Bhatta Parsaul.On the other hand, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Ms Mayawati today termed the incident in Bhatta Parsaul village of Greater NOIDA as a conspiracy hatched by the opposition against the BSP government. Talking to reporters in Lucknow on Thursday Ms Mayawati said that the matter related with the compensation of farmers in Bhatta Parsaul was settled long ago but the opposition has made it an issue by inciting violence through miscreants in the village.National Human Rights Commission has decided to depute its investigation team to the violence hit villages for an on the spot inquiry in the matter. The Commission has expressed its anguish over violence in certain villages in Greater Noida. The National Commission for Women has termed the police action as shocking and demanded a CBI probe.
