Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) in busy Ahmedabad roads is a big success story of modern day’s urban public transport. Launched under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission-(JnURM)-a flagship programme of UPA Government-the project is running successfully as pride of Ahmedabad.AIR Ahmedabad correspondent reports that total project cost is envisaged at about 1,000 crore rupees, of which 600 crore has already been pumped in for Phase-I. Central government is funding 35 per cent of the project, 15 per cent is to be funded by state government and the remaining 50 per cent by the municipal corporation.AIR correspondent reports, unlike National Capital Delhi- where BRTS project is struggling, Ahmedabad BRTS proved a grand success. It is nearly 30 km long and will grow to 90 km in next two years. It won the prestigious 2010 Sustainable Transport Award from the Transportation Research Board in Washington. From being clouded by doubt on whether bus rapid transit, which works well in Latin American cities, would be workable in Indian conditions, Ahmedabad BRTS, which moves 70,000 passengers daily, is on its way to being a model for developing countries. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has full credit for this grand success. For the first three months, they ran its BRTS free; then made design changes based on commuter feedback, such as longer buses. During the first three months of the trial run, AMC picked up special opinion makers-students, professors and teachers, journalists, top industrialists of Gujarat-and gave them free rides to seek suggestions.
