In the United States, a late-season snowstorm began to weaken today. It had closed schools, grounded 6,000 flights and keeping nearly 100,000 customers without power in the mid-Atlantic and north-eastern region.<br/><br/>Blizzard warnings were issued in parts of Connecticut, Massachusetts and upstate New York but the National Weather Service lifted the warnings for New York City after snow turned to sleet and hail.<br/><br/>Some cities, such as Washington D.C. and New York, got just a few inches of snow, far less than the anticipated amounts.<br/><br/>Governors in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia declared states of emergency at the outset of the storm.<br/><br/>The forecasts forced the postponement of the first meeting between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Washington until Friday.<br/><br/>The United Nations headquarters also remained closed for the day, apart from courts and a string of popular museums.
