Last rites of Girija Devi to be performed tomorrow at Varanasi

Last rites of veteran India classical singer Girija Devi will be<br/>performed tomorrow at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. She was passed away yesterday in Kolkata following cardiac arrest. She was 88.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that her mortal remains will be<br/>brought at Varanasi tomorrow morning from Kolkata by her daughter and grandson and disciples and it will be kept at her Chouka Ghat<br/>residence for public homage. Funeral procession will be carried out<br/>from her residence in afternoon and funeral will be held at<br/>Manikarnika Ghat.<br/>'<br/>Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today announced at Varanasi that 'Sanskritik Sankul', a cultural complex, at Chowkaghat will be named after her. The Governor Ram Naik and chief minister have<br/>expressed their condolences on the demise of the Thumri queen and said the singer had helped in elevating the profile of Thumri during her lifetime. Girija Devi, the doyen of Banaras Gharana, was born in Varanasi's Nati Imli area on May 8, 1929.
