Last rites of former Nepalese PM GP Koirala to be performed today

In Nepal, thousands of people are thronging Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu to pay their last respect to the former Prime Minister and President of Nepali Congress Girija Prasad Koirala. <br/><br/>Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, cabinet ministers, leaders of various political parties and representatives of diplomatic missions were among those who visited the stadium to pay their tribute to the champion of democracy and architect of Nepal's peace process. Mr. Koirala died in Kathmandu on Saturday. <br/><br/>From Dashrath stadium, the body of Koirala will be taken in procession to the Pashupati Aryaghat for the last rites this afternoon. The daughter of late leader will light the funeral pyre. The Nepal government has declared a three day state mourning from Sunday. <br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports, the national flag is flying at half-mast as a mark of respect to the departed leader who had served five times as Prime Minister and also as the acting head of the state immediately after the abolition of monarchy. <br/><br/>A high level Indian delegation consisting of Lok Sabha Speaker Meera Kumar, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and External Affairs Minister S.M.Krishna has arrived in Kathmandu to attend the funeral of Girija Prasad Koirala. <br/> <br/>Immediately on arrival, the Indian leaders visited the residence of Sujata Koirala, the daughter of the late Nepali leader and Deputy Prime Minister to pay their condolences. <br/> <br/>Talking briefly to newsmen, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee described late Girija Babu as a tall leader of the sub-continent who played an important role in establishing multi-party democracy and peace process. Ms. Meera Kumar said Girija Babu was the first democratically elected Prime Minister and people of India deeply mourn his passing. <br/> <br/>AIR Correspondent reports, the Indian leaders later visited the Dashrath stadium where Koirala's body is kept for people to pay their last respect. In his hometown Biratnagar, a pall of gloom descended where people are mourning his demise by closing shops and business establishments.<br/><br/>President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and leaders of various political parties have condoled the death of Mr. Koirala, the first democratically elected Prime Minister of Nepal.
