Last rites of Arjun Singh on Sunday

The last rites of veteran Congress leader Arjun Singh will be performed on Sunday at his home town Churhat in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh with full state honours. The 81-year old leader died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi on Friday. His body will be flown to Bhopal today. An official release said all Government offices and schools in the state would remain closed today. However, board examinations will be held as per schedule. President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi have condoled the death of the veteran leader. Dr. Manmohan Singh said, in his passing away the country has lost a veteran leader who left a strong imprint on the country's political life. Mrs Sonia Gandhi expressed sympathies with the bereaved family and recalled his contribution to the development of Congress Party and nation. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee have also condoled his death. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced a three day state mourning in the state.
