Last day for withdrawal of names for Meghalaya Assembly Elections is tomorrow

In Meghalaya, tomorrow is the last date for the withdrawal of the nominations. After scrutiny, papers of 375 candidates were found valid out of which 36 are female candidates.
''
'' AIR correspondent reports that despite the fact that women have dominance in the society of Meghalaya, they are under-represented in State Politics.
''
'' Meghalaya is one of the few states in the country where women voters are more than men voters. They also outnumber their male counterparts in voting percentage during elections.
''
''Despite being a matrilineal society, the representation of women in Meghalaya assembly has remained poor. The current Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has only four women legislators. Meghalaya Government 2021 passed a Policy for reservation of 50 percent seats for women in village local bodies including Village Employment Councils and Village Health Councils to provide an enabling space for women in the grassroots to partake in decision-making realms. While the undercurrent of change seems to be gradually taking flight, how many out of the 36 women candidates make it to the assembly is still left to be seen.
