Lanka's Tamil parties call for Jaffna bandh over killing of two students

In Sri Lanka, major Tamil political parties have called for a bandh tomorrow in northern Jaffna province to protest against killing of two students in police firing. Former MP of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Suresh Premachandran said that six parties will be organizing the bandh. The two university students, riding a motorcycle, were killed on Friday night after policemen opened fire when students did not stop when asked to.

Five policemen have been arrested in connection with the incident and government has ordered an independent inquiry into the incident. Postmortem reports said one student was killed in police firing while the other died in collision after the driver lost its balance.

Most of the security forces including police are from majority Sinhala community and this creates racial tensions in northern province where Tamils are in majority. People in the north rue the fact that security forces have still an overwhelming presence in north despite the end of ethnic war in 2009. Tamil parties are demanding more powers to provinces to rule themselves under a federal system and replace the existing one, which is more centralized.
