Lankan war inquiry commission starts

In Sri Lanka, a Government-appointed Commission has begun probing the final years of a long drawn-out civil war which ended last year. A former peace negotiator of the Tamil Tiger rebels was among the first to give testimony as the eight-member panel started hearings on the civil war yesterday. There is skepticism if the international enquiry will adequately address international concerns about human rights abuses during the last stages of the war. The victory over LTTE last year was accompanied by accusations of human rights abuses by the rebels and government forces in the last phases of the war.
