An all-party meeting convened by the government to build consensus on a resolution to be moved in Parliament on the violation of human rights of Tamilians in Sri Lanka remained inconclusive. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath told newsmen in New Delhi last night that the meeting had been called to end the impasse in Parliament over the Lankan Tamil issue but it has not produced any results.
DMK has been insisting that the government bring a resolution in Parliament in order to move amendments to the final draft text on the issue at the United Nations Human Rights Council. After withdrawing support to the UPA government over the Sri Lankan Tamil issue, DMK's five representatives resigned from the Union Council of Ministers which were accepted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh late last night.
In a related development, the Prime Minister was briefed by top officials on the US-sponsored resolution on human rights violations in Sri Lanka, within hours of government announcing that it will move amendments to the final draft text at Geneva-based UNHRC to send a resolute message on the issue. The resolution will come up for voting today.
Proceedings in both the Houses of Parliament were also stalled on the Srilankan Tamil issue and Samajwadi Party's demand to sack Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma yesterday
