Lankan president denies shooting Indian fishermen

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has denied that the Sri Lankan Navy had fired on Indian fishermen which resulted in the death of a fisherman. At a breakfast meeting with the foreign correspondents at his temple Trees residence in Colombo, he said that the Sri Lankan Navy was not involved in the incident. The Sri Lankan President said that despite the preliminary investigation – which has ruled out the presence of the Sri Lankan Navy in the area , he had asked the Navy Commander to conduct a detailed investigation in to the matter.The Sri Lankan President said that India and Sri Lanka need a ‘mechanism to settle’ this fishermen problem, especially when they cross the International Maritime Boundary (IMB) for fishing purpose. He added that this is a ‘humanitarian issue’ and that Sri Lanka is ‘concerned’ about it.Director Sri Lankan Naval operations , Commodore Neil Rosayro , who was also present at the Sri Lankan President’s official residence said that the incident happened well within the Indian waters , which is 14 nautical miles off Jagannathpuram , and that the Sri Lankan Navy had nothing to do with it .Well informed Indian sources , however said that the presence of the Sri Lankan Navy in the region during the incident cannot be denied and that they moved out after the shooting took place.
