Sri Lanka police have recruited Tamil youth to serve as police officers in the northern Jaffna peninsula. Deputy Inspector General of the North Gamini Silva today said that some 160 Tamil youth had been recruited to the police in Jaffna, the cultural capital of the island's Tamil minority. Sri Lankan police service has historically been dominated by recruits from the Sinhala majority. He said that increased policing in Jaffna will see to the education of the Jaffna public on traffic regulations and highway code. Jaffna peninsula is currently undergoing a phase of returning to normalcy following the end to the war between Tamil Tiger rebels and the government troops in May 2010.
