Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe has sought to allay fears about proposed Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) with India saying it would help promote economic development in the country.<br/><br/>Replying to a parliament question yesterday, the Prime Minister said there was no need for Sri Lankans to harbor fears of ETCA as it would help hundred thousand Lankan youth to find job opportunities. He said, the objective of ETCA was to obtain a market for the Lankan products. The Prime Minister said India's Commerce minister would visit Sri Lanka in future to sign the agreement.<br/><br/>His comments came as a four-member Indian Commerce delegation concluded discussions with its Sri Lankan counterparts in Colombo yesterday. The draft agreement is expected to be finalized during visit of Sri Lankan delegation to India in coming weeks. It will be presented to Sri Lankan Parliament for discussions before it is ratified by both countries.<br/><br/>There are some apprehensions expressed by certain political groups about ETCA saying that Sri Lankans will lose job opportunities to the Indian professionals if the agreement comes into effect. India has sought to allay such fears saying it is prepared to move at a pace comfortable to Sri Lanka and address Sri Lanka's concerns on ETCA.
