Lankan Navy detains 24 more Indian fishermen

The Srilankan Navy has apprehended 24 more Indian fishermen. They were handed over to police at Elavalai police station adjacent to Karainagar in Jaffna district last night. The 112 Indian fishermen apprehended on Tuesday alongwith 18 trawlers have been remanded to judicial custody untill the end of this month by a local court in Jaffna. Hectic diplomatic efforts are on in Colombo to secure the early release of Indian fishermen. The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said, India has taken a very serious view of the incident. He said, the Srilankan government has already been told in strong terms that such a behaviour was not acceptable. Meanwhile in Tamil Nadu, the ruling DMK held a protest against the arrests yesterday. More than 5,000 workers alongwith fishermen courted arrests while trying to take out a protest march.
