Lankan Navy arrests four Tamil fishermen

Sri Lankan Navy arrested four fishermen from Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu when they were fishing near Kachatheevu last night. <br/><br/>The fishermen were taken to Kankesanthurai for questioning according to local fishermen sources. Meanwhile fishermen representatives from India and Sri Lanka will be holding fourth round talks at Delhi from tomorrow. <br/><br/>Fishermen from Tamil Nadu are hoping that lasting solution will be found through fishermen representative talks to be held tomorrow. Sri Lankan fishermen urge that Tamil Nadu fishermen should not use Erattaimadi, roller madi, kurukku madi nets as it will completely destroy fish resources. Tamil fishermen say that they need at least three years to change their method of fishing. <br/><br/>They also want a solution to the problem of Sri Lankan Navy apprehending fishermen from Tamil Nadu near international maritime boundary line. The local fishermen also urge the government to secure the release of fellow fishermen lodged in Lankan jail and 115 fishing boats detained by Sri Lanka. Fishermen from Tamil Nadu say that their livelihood is badly affected as Sri Lanka is detaining their fishing boast as deterrent measure.

The Tamil fishermen have been taken to Mannar camp according to fisherman sources. <br/><br/>Sri Lankan Navy has arrested four Tamil fishermen from Rameswaram when they were fishing near Kactheevu islands. The Lankan Navy also detained one fishing boat. Sri Lankan Navy had earlier arrested six fishermen from Pudukottai Jagadapattinam on Sunday. Tamil fishermen are urging the immediate release of 47 Tamil fishermen already languishing in Lankan jail. <br/><br/>They also urge the government to take steps for the release of 57 fishing boats detained by Sri Lanka. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalaithaa wrote a letter urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps to release 47 Tamil fishermen in Lankan Jail and 57 fishing boats. She said that the livelihood of poor fishermen is badly affected due to damage of fishing boats.
