Lankan court found Fonseka guilty

A Sri Lankan Court Martial probing charges of alleged involvement of General (Retd) Sarath Fonseka in politics while in uniform has found him guilty.The military court has recommended sentencing him for a dishonorable discharge from rank pending approval of President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as Commander-in -Chief, military officials said.A statement on the Presidential Secretariat website eloborated that when an officer is cashiered, he looses the rank and all the awards honours received as a military officer.The first Court Martial examined cases relating to General Sarath Fonseka's alleged involvement in political work while in active service.Fonseka had successfully led the victorious Sri Lankan Army in the war against the LTTE and he was elevated to the position as the first four star General of the country.The defence counsels of General Fonseka were not present at the proceedings of the first Court Martial this week, which examined cases relating to General Sarath Fonseka's alleged involvement in political work while in active service.The retired General, Fonseka who unsuccessfully contested as the common opposition candidate the January Presidential election against the incumbent Mahinda Rajapaksa, is under the detention of the military since February.A second court martial proceeding are on against the former Army Chief The former military chief is being tried in two court martial for making military purchases in contravention of the set procedures.The court martial proceedings against the retired General Sarath Fonseka are the first ever military trial against an officer of the highest rank in the history of the Sri Lanka Army.
