Lankan AG's opinion sought on holding provincial council polls

In Sri Lanka, an all-party meeting today on holding of provincial council elections decided to summon the country's Attorney General for the next meeting and seek his legal opinion on the issue. Opposition parties led by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa are demanding early resolution of the issue and holding of early elections. <br />''<br />''A petition was filed before the Supreme Court last week by an opposition-backed organization requesting it to order the Elections Commission to hold elections immediately. <br />''<br />''Election commission has said that it cannot hold elections because the new electoral law passed by parliament in August 2017, has not come into force yet. President Maithripala Sirisena had introduced a cabinet resolution last month to hold elections as per the old electoral system. <br />''<br />''<span style="color: #222222;">However, there is no consensus among political parties on the issue and the matter is pending. </span><br />
