Lanka, Vietnam to increase Bilateral Trade

On the conclusion of the three day visit of the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to Vietnam ,the two countries agreed to encourage bilateral trade and set the target of 100 million US$ for two-way trade by the year 2012.<br/>The Viet Nam President Nguyen Minh Triet also announced his country’s decision to reopen a resident Embassy in Colombo.<br/>A high level delegation led by the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa was on a three day visit to Vietnam to discuss matters of mutual interest which included trade and investment promotion, agriculture, cultural cooperation, air services and defence and trans national crime prevention.<br/>In response to Sri Lanka President’s request for assistance in clearing mined areas in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka, the Vietnamese side agreed to consider cooperation with Sri Lanka in de mining process.<br/>The two sides also signed agreements on Protection and Promotion of Investments; on Preventing and Combating Crimes; Work Plan for the on Agriculture and Fisheries Development Cooperation and MoU on cultural cooperation.
