Lanka to scale down emergency in coming months

Emergency provisions in Sri Lanka , existent since 1983 will be further scaled down in coming months. This was stated by the Sri Lankan Prime Minister D M Jayaratne in his first interaction with the foreign media today who said that in view of the improved security situation in the country after the Tamil Tigers were militarily defeated in May last year , there will be a ‘gradual relaxation’ of emergency regulations every month. The Sri Lankan Prime Minister also asked western countries to crack down on Tamils trying to revive Tiger separatist movement, which was crushed last year..Declaring that Colombo will not tolerate moves by LTTE remnants to form a transnational government, D M Jayaratne said the government was aware of moves by some sections of the diaspora to revive separatist movement in the north. On being asked about the issue of devolution, he said that he favoured the cause based on equality for all communities. The Sri Lankan Parliament early this week had approved the extension of relaxed emergency regulations , which included withdrawal of the provision with regard to the imposition of curfews and those requiring householders to give information about inmates as well as the powers given to security forces personnel to enter private properties for search operations. The government has also relaxed the provisions that dealt with propaganda activities, printing of documents and distributing them in support of terrorism. It has done away with the cluster of emergency regulations that restricts processions and meetings that were considered.
