Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a sacred fig tree in Anuradhapura and is said to be a sapling of the historical Bodhi tree. It is the oldest historically recorded tree in the world. This gift of the sacred sapling is to commemorate 2,600 years of Buddha Jayanthi. The sapling will be planted in the new Buddha Udyana being created in Patna, to commemorate 2,600 years of the Sambuddha Jayanthi.According to the government sources here , a 10-member delegation from India is in the sacred city of Anuradhapura to take the sapling.Anuradhapura became a great city after the arrival of a cutting from the Bodhi Tree ('tree of enlightenment'), the Buddha's fig tree, in the 3rd century BC. The sacred branch was brought to Sri Lanka by Sanghamitta, the founder of an order of Buddhist nuns. Anuradhapura went on to become a Ceylonese political and religious capital in the 4th century BC. The city, now a UNESCO World Heritage site amd lies 205 kms north of capital Colombo. The Indian delegation is expected to brief the Sri Lankan Government about the Sambuddha Jayanthi celebrations to be held there for a whole year.
