Lanka: Rajapaksa again wins Presidential poll, Prez congratulates him

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been declared elected for a second term in office trouncing united opposition candidate Sarath Fonseka. Announcing this in Colombo this evening, the Election Commissioner, Dayananda Dissanayake said 64 year old Rajapaksa secured 5.9 million votes that is 58 percent against Fonseka's 4.1 million or 40 per cent in the total of 70 per cent votes cast.<br/><br/>AIR Colombo correspondent reports Fonseka who had checked into a local hotel on the plea that he feels threatened, stayed in his room throughout the day as hordes of reporters waited the whole day looking for an opportunity for an interaction with him.<br/><br/>A beaming Mr. Rajapaksa in his first informal interaction with the media minutes after the Election Commission declared him as the winner of the 2010 election told reporters that during his second stint he would strive for development and reconciliation among the majority Sinhalese and the minority Tamil and Muslim communities as promised in his election manifesto. A confident looking President in response to a question on the script being played by the defeated candidate asked, ‘What is his problem? He can always get in touch me on matters related to his security. After all he was my former Army Chief’.<br/><br/>Later amidst much cheering and bursting of crackers he told a group of party supporters outside that he would make Sri Lanka a number one destination for investment and tourism. He also asked them to gear up for the Parliamentary election scheduled in April.<br/><br/>The President Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil today congratulated the President of Sri lanka Mr. Mahindra Rajpaksa on his re-election in Presidential elections. In her message, Mrs. Patil has expressed the hope that under his leadership Sri Lanka will attain greater heights and find lasting peace. She said, India and Sri Lanka share historical and friendly relations. Mrs. Patil assured Sri Lanka of India’s commitment to further improve bilateral relations.
