Sri Lanka has increased the wages of the tea plantation workers by nearly 25 percent as the tea export volume from the island nation is expected to increase by 10 percent in the year 2011. Workers, mostly Tamils of Indian origin will now be paid 515 rupees a day for the next two years, up from 415 rupees. The tea sector employs directly or indirectly over one million people in Sri Lanka.
