Lanka Prez to launch IRCON-rebuilt Colombo-Killinochchi rail link

Train services between Sri Lankan capital Colombo and former LTTE stronghold of Kilinochchi will resume on the 14th of next month with President Mahinda Rajapaksa launching the service. The rail line has been reconstructed by the India Railways subsidiary company, IRCON, with full financial assistance of Indian government.Sri Lanka's Northern Line from Vavuniya to Kankasanthurai in the north was completely destroyed by the Tamil Tigers during the three-decade long war. The entire rail network has been rebuilt from scratch by the Indian Railways. Locomotives and passenger wagons have also been imported from India.The rail link is crucial for the rapid economic development of the war torn region, and the rail line construction was completed on a priority basis by IRCON.
