The principal opposition grouping in Sri Lanka, United National Party has said that it would introduce a motion titled ‘Right to Information’ in parliament for consideration by the House this week.UNP media spokesman Gayantha Karunatilleke told a news conference that Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe will table the motion in parliament as a private member’s resolution.Akin to India, the bill seeks to guarantee people’s right to obtain information on matters relating to the government and state institutions.Several NGOs in Sri Lanka have been championing the cause for information freedom and one such group had also invited Ms Aruna Roy, a social activist to give a talk and spread awareness on the subject to the intelligentsia and the masses.The UNP decision has come close on the heels of move by the government to set up a Media Development Authority to help promote independent journalism in the country.Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Police are still clueless about the identity of the persons who had attacked the Siyatha Television premises in the heart of Colombo last week.According to reported estimates, the damage caused by the petrol bomb attack and the fire caused by it has been worth nearly 50 million rupees.
