Lanka: Modernized Galle – Matara railway track to open tomorrow

In Sri Lanka, the modernized Galle – Matara railway track upgraded with India's assistance will be declared open tomorrow. This will enable trains to go at a speed of 100 kilometres per hour. The rail lines , damaged during the 2004 tsunami.A line of credit of 167.4 million dollars has been given by India for the rehabilitation of the Colombo-Matara rail link. Indian High Commissioner Ashok K. Kantha in August had ceremonially inaugurated the work on Sri Lanka's southern coastal railway line. The work on the railway line is being handled by the Indian Company IRCON.The first train will leave Galle railway station at 11 am tomorrow and the Minister of Transport Kumara Welgama and the Indian High Commissioner of Sri Lanka Ashok K Kantha will be the chief guests at this function. Under the 2nd stage of this project the railway track from Galle to Hikkaduwa will be modernized. Hikkaduwa to Kalutara South and Kalutara South to Maradana will be modernized under the 3rd and 4th stages respectively. India is also committed to infrastructure development in Northern Sri Lanka, after the end of the armed conflict . New Delhi has already announced a line of credit of 800 million Dollars for the reconstruction of railway infrastructure in Northern Sri Lanka.
