Lanka: JVP stages protest demanding release of Fonseka

The ultra left JVP in Sri Lanka today staged a protest demanding the release of the former four star General Sarath Fonseka who is currently serving his jail term. The demonstration was to mark one year since the former war hero and the opposition Presidential candidate Fonseka was taken into custody by the Sri Lankan government over alleged charges of treason. Later a court martial found him guilty of corrupt practices and was sentenced to jail. In the process, he also lost the Parliamentary seat. The Movement for Democracy led by the JVP held a sit down protest opposite the Welikada prison this afternoon calling for the immediate release of jailed former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka. Around one thousand Fonseka’s supporters had gathered outside the prison. His wife, Anoma Fonseka pledged to carry on her struggle to have him freed.
