Lanka frees 23 TN fishermen

The 23 Tamil Nadu fishermen, who were apprehended by the Sri Lankan authorities last week for unauthorized crossing of the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) have been released by a Sri Lankan court late this evening. The fishermen along with their trawlers will set to sail from Talaimannar to India tomorrow morning. They will be escorted by the Sri Lankan Navy and be handed over to the Indian Coast guard. The Consulate General of Jaffna Mr. Mahalingam said that since the release came late in the evening, it was decided to let the fishermen sail back to the country early tomorrow. The Indian consulate in Jaffna is in touch had been in touch with the Sri Lankan authorities to complete the formalities to secure the release of the fishermen along with their boats who were arrested last week. According to the Sri Lankan Navy, the 23 Indian fishermen were caught by them fishing about six nautical miles off Tailaimannar on the 20th of this month.
