In Sri Lanka, the Appeal Court today issued an interim order favouring the detained former Army chief General Sarath Fonseka. The court officials said, the court ordered that proceedings of the first of the two court martials against General Fonseka be delayed until May 21.

This was in response to an application filed by Fonseka, who was elected to parliament in the April 8 parliamentary election. The two court martials have met several times despite Fonseka calling them illegal.

The next hearing is fixed for early July. Fonseka was arrested by the military police on Feb. 8, a week after he lost the presidential election to the incumbent Mahinda Rajapaksa.
