Sri Lanka today celebrated the 125th anniversary of the Buddhist flag on the Adhi Vesak Poya or the Full moon Day.According to the lunar movement and the Sinhala calendar , every month the full moon or the Poya day is linked to a Buddhist religious event. But this year , according to astrological considerations , there is an additional Full Moon day in the year which is referred as the Adhi Vesak Poya Day. This Adhi Poya occurs once in 3 years, due to the change of planetary movements. And on this day 125 years ago, the first Buddhist flag was hoisted. It is widely believed that Buddhism was brought to Sri Lanka by Emperor Ashok and since then Sinhala Buddhists started to hold religious ceremonies on Full Moon Day or commonly referred as Poya days.
