Landslide causes enormous damage in Colombia; over 100 feared missing; many burried alive

In Colombia, about 100 people remained missing and feared dead following a landslide that buried a suburb of Bello in tonnes of sodden soil. Interior Minister German Vargas told reporters that 20 bodies have been recovered so far. Yesterday's landslide was triggered by Colombia's worst rain in at least 40 years, which also have driven thousands from their homes and damaged coffee and flower crops. Many people fled the area fearing further landslides, with dozens spending the night outdoors covered with blankets, while others took refuge in a temporary shelter in a nearby community centre. John Rendon, disaster coordinator for Antioquia state, where the suburb of Bello is located told newspersons that thirty brick homes were buried by at least 1.7 million cubic feet of earth.
